Sweatbox opened it’s doors for the first time in March 1993 in an old downtown building one block from the 6th street entertainment district. Immediately we began recording almost all the local underground bands. Within a couple of years word was out to the rest of the country that Sweatbox was a great place for touring bands to record. In 1995 we met Japanese bands through SXSW, leading to 17 full length projects and a continued role in organizing Japanese national tours and SXSW showcases.
For seventeen years Sweatbox Studio has been one of the favorite destinations in town for local, national, and international artists. The Austin-American Statesman's Annual XL Studio Guide ranks Sweatbox in the top ten out of over two hundred Austin studios and writes:
"Since opening its doors in March 1993, Sweatbox, openly referred to as 'legendary' in punk circles, has become one of the most famous garage rock studios in the world. Underground bands from as far away as Europe and Asia, not to mention several generations of Austin rockers, come here for a gnarly, live'r-than-God sound."
In January 2006 a fire destroyed the building that housed Sweatbox for 13 years. We are now extremely excited to open the doors to our new location in east Austin. The comfortable new facility is twice as large as the old one.
Calling Sweatbox home since the very beginning are legendary producers Tim Kerr, Mike Mariconda, Bryan Nelson, and owner Mike Vasquez. All four continually bring in bands from all over the world.
